Have you ever wondered who thought of a certain food? Most of the time there are more than one source. Just like a hot pocket. The Spanish are said to be the first to create the empanada and the British are thought to be the creators of a meat filled pastry called a pastie. Which were apparently created for Cornish tin miners to take down into the mines for their lunch.
According the the article in Wikipedia…the story goes that, covered in dirt from head to foot (including some arsenic often found with tin), they (the miners) could hold the pasty by the folded crust and eat the rest without touching it, discarding the dirty pastry. The pastry they threw away was supposed to appease the knockers, capricious spirits in the mines who might otherwise lead miners into danger.
Ours are nothing like the original but that is what creative cooking is all about…right? We make our own dough from a crescent roll recipe then roll them like burritos. The filling is some kind of lunch meat and cheese; kids love hot pocket day.
